It has an abundance of wildlife and biodiversity and there is lots to do and see for all ages. A visit to any remote area should always be well planned. Check weather conditions and access to avoid disappointment. Plan extra early if you are visiting Kakadu in the winter school holidays. This is the most popular time for visitation with perfect weather conditions and the opportunity to get away from cold winters in the South.

Getting to Kakadu is easy. Both roads are sealed, open all year, and in fairly good condition, although you do need to keep an eye out for wandering cattle, buffalo and kangaroos. All of the must—see attractions, such as Ubirr and Nourlangie with their magnificent rock art galleries, tour hub Cooinda and the wildlife-filled Yellow Water Billabong are easily accessible from this main road, as are the popular accommodation options and most of the parks that cater for caravans. The jaw-dropping cliff-top plunge pool at the top of Gunlom Falls is on a gravel road, which is a bit rough and rocky but fine for most 2WDs in the dry, as are many of the camping areas. A 4WD will get you out to Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls although you still have to walk the last kilometre or so , Sandy Billabong, the more remote waterholes and some of the bush camping areas.
Last week I outlined the details of an Epic 11 Night Road Trip around the Northern Territory, which will be covered over 3 parts, this week. The first 4 nights of our trip were spent in Darwin and you can read a separate post on the time spent in the city here. Leaving the Saltwater Suites in Darwin, a taxi drove us to the local Maui Depot where we were picking up our new home for the next 7 nights, a 6 berth motorhome.
