The wild monkeys were observed mounting the deer in Minoo, central Japan. Similar monkey-deer interactions on Yakushima Island were reported in January But while the previous research is based on anecdotal evidence, the current work focuses on the numbers.
For so long, almost to a humorous extent, we have looked right past the truth; which is that the females are leaving their young, they're objectifying their mates, they're the agents of desire. The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight, August 12! The meteors are particles left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle. The bright moon will wash out much of the show but you could still spot ten to 15 an hour depending on where you are. Watch the skies! Yep, maintaining hostile eye contact with a gull may deter them from snarfing your french fries.
Darwin's theory of sexual selection is under attack. The first of four reports here, here and here from this year's meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. HOW the peacock got his tail is one of evolutionary biology's best-known fables. It was first told by none other than the master of evolutionary theory himself: Charles Darwin. It is, Darwin said, all down to the fickle, female peahen.
The randy macaque monkey was caught on camera hoisting himself up on a deer's back and furiously humping. Scientists believe that animals from different species could start having sex with each other after video footage emerged of a monkey and a deer. The footage shows the male macaque sexually interacting with a female sika deer in Japan by researchers earlier this year. In a video, the monkey hoists himself up on his deer and begins furiously gyrating against its back. But after a few seconds, he appears to lose interest and jumps off, as the deer begins to lick herself clean.
